From punks and goths to Harajuku girls, alternative movement blueprints are those who strived for the rejection of a hyper normative society. Though we feared to be different, what we fear nowadays is to be “basic”. What happens then, if different is the new normal ? Indeed, as an individual, the very essence of being alternative stems from putting yourself socially at risk. In reality, few are those who are actually taking this chance. We are witnessing the mimicry of a bloody efficient teenager technique : let the nerd try so you don’t have to fail.

It would be obtuse to gatekeep alt-fashion, and even dumber to feel outraged by those who just recognized the chunky shoe supremacy. What shall be addressed is the need to be different in order to feel special.
The prevalence of social medias in our society has set up a race for niches. It is, indeed, way more easy to make the cut being the first one than it is being the best one. As soon as a niche is overloaded, you’re then very likely to seek for another one. Social medias, especially Instagram, allowed us to hide our lack of added value behind our looks, and to make millions out of it. Thus, self realization is now rather a matter of likes and engagement-rate, and self-persuasion is our way to cope with it.

As part of the masses, you may hardly not lose yourself -and your money- constantly chasing for the next bandwagon. It’s urgent to be more thoughtful about ourselves and what we like. There’s, in fact, nothing wrong with being basic. We just pushed the narrative of being the next trend-setter a little too far.
